Panel Discussion 1: Modernising Railway and Transport: Trends, Challenges & Opportunities

Ved Prakash Dudeja, Vice Chairman, Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA)

We have made significant progress in recent years, especially in utilizing surplus railway land to generate revenue. Since 2014-15, we have steadily increased our revenue, with a total of 80 crores in 2018-19 and estimated to cross 500 crores this year. Our growth rate over the last four years has been an impressive CAGR of approximately 56%.

Rajesh Agarwal, Managing Director, Haryana Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation

No projects can be completed without strong cooperation amongst various stakeholders and effective coordination between Central and State governments. Therefore, we must maximise our strength and core competency so as to achieve the objective in the best possible way.

It was for the first time in 2014 when the present government took over that the Ministry of Railways offered an open invitation to all the state governments to form joint ventures (JV) with the ministry of railway. The move was innovative in concept as prior to this no JV was formed with the Ministry without a DPR had been approved and the project had been identified. The move was aimed at giving the expertise of Railway at the disposal of the state government. This is how the JV with the Railway Ministry came into being.

Sharat Sahai Mathur, GGM (CCCO & EA), Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), Ministry of Railways

In the future, integration will be the key driver and enabler of progress in the country. Efforts towards integration are being made across all areas, including the Kochi mobility initiative and the Gati Shakti platform. Gati Shakti aims to create an integrated logistics ecosystem across the country, with information acting as the fuel that drives it forward.

Our goal is to integrate the IT systems of railways and establish IT-enabled solutions that can seamlessly connect with our partners. The base for this integration will be Gati Shakti, which will serve as the backbone for integrating the applications of all our partner organisations.
