Panel Discussion 4: India towards Sustainable Transport & Green Mobility and Technology Shaping the Future of the Transport Sector

Sajan P. John, Chief Operating Officer, Kochi Water Metro Ltd

Transportation is responsible for 26% of the world’s CO2 emissions, with over 70% of those emissions coming from road transport. Shipping, on the other hand, accounts for more than 80% of global trade.

Dr Satheesh Babu P. K., Associate Professor, Head of the Department, Department of Ship Technology, CUSAT

We are thinking to incorporate eco-friendly features in ship designs that have minimal impact on the environment. Currently, large ships rely on crude oil as fuel, but we are transitioning to LNG fuel. Solar-powered vehicles have already demonstrated their effectiveness, and this technology is being adopted for boats as well. The industry is shifting from fossil fuel-powered boats to electric, solar, and even hydrogen-powered boats.

Hari Kumar R, General Manager (Technology & Planning), Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL)

There are three ways to approach sustainable transportation. Firstly, from a technological perspective, as we can consider measures to reduce vehicle emissions, through the use of electric or hydrogen-powered vehicles. Secondly, from a logistics standpoint, it is important to ensure last-mile connectivity in order to encourage uptake of these vehicles. Lastly, implementation of policies which plays a significant role, as demonstrated by Singapore’s efforts to discourage private vehicle use through high taxes on car purchases, and ongoing development of public transportation options.
