In India, more than 60 per cent of healthcare is provided by the private sector. In contrast, more than 90 per cent of healthcare in Sikkim is provided by the government. The private sector is a very small player there. Mostly private and secondary healthcare is managed by the government of Sikkim. To allay public concern, we banned smoking in public places in 2010 and we also banned chewing of tobacco, gutka and paan parag. What has really helped us is the vision of the Chief Minister. He is really keen to see that the health sector in Sikkim is well-developed.
